Congratulations to our very deserving 2017 scholarship recipient Katelyn Keen!
Dr. Christena Ward, OD, optometrist and owner of Complete Family Eye Care, soon to be renamed EyeTech Optometry, awards a scholarship to one fortunate Summit High School student annually. The scholarship is for a Summit student to pursue an education and career in some area of the medical field. Each year scholarship candidates submit an essay outlining why medicine is their field of choice and which field of medicine is of interest to them.
Katelyn’s winning essay outlines her enthusiasm for nursing. She says, “Nurses have been described as the “hospitality of the hospital.” They bridge the gap between the medical care, the patient care and comfort. Nurses have to find the balance between their medical knowledge and how to treat a patient medically, and also how to make a patient feel cared for, and comfortable in a probably very scary situation for the patient. They try to take the scary environment of a hospital and make it seem more warm and comforting, and to meet the needs of the patient at that exact time.”
Katelyn plans to attend the University of Colorado in Colorado Springs’ pre-nursing program. This scholarship will be put toward those program costs and her hope is to be admitted to the nursing program in her sophomore year. Katelyn’s field of interest currently leans toward pediatric nursing or trauma. She outlines her interest in working with Doctors Without Borders after graduating from nursing school. Doctors Without Borders is a large and highly impactful non-profit organization whose motto is “Medical aid where it is needed most. Independent. Neutral. Impartial.”.
Katelyn Keen said about receiving the scholarship,
“Thank you so much for investing in my future and your help will allow me to pursue my dream career and make a huge difference in people's lives!”
